Located just west of downtown St. Petersburg, Historic Kenwood is a vibrant community of some 2500 residents, 1100 homes, and 300 businesses. The neighborhood is bounded by the North side of Central Ave to the South side of 9th Ave N., West from I-275 to 34th St. N. We’re characterized by American bungalow architecture, a strong emphasis on the arts, a genuinely warm and welcoming neighborhood, a diverse population, and an active neighborhood association with numerous ways to get involved.
We’re one of only a few of St. Petersburg’s 109 neighborhoods listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Historic Kenwood has one of the highest concentrations of bungalows in Florida. Many of the homes date from the 1920s, when the Arts and Crafts movement had reached its zenith in cities as diverse as San Diego, Denver, Chicago, and, of course, St. Petersburg. BungalowFest, an annual tour of Historic Kenwood homes, celebrates the architectural richness of our community. Our Historic Preservation Task Force promotes restoration and provides a way for homeowners to recycle historic artifacts and architectural elements at no cost.
Historic Kenwood is enriched by the number of visual and performing artists living and working in our midst. In October of 2014, we received our official designation as a St. Petersburg Artist Enclave (link is external), a city zoning overlay that will help us to attract more artists by enabling them to produce and sell their work, teach from home studios, and collectively hold up to 12 events annually. With a number of galleries on our doorstep, a fledgling performance series, our periodic Art in the Park events, Kenwood is truly a creative environment.
We think of Historic Kenwood as a “neighorhoody” place – authentic, warm, and welcoming. With our monthly Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association meetings, monthly porch parties, and numerous volunteer committees and activities, there are numerous ways to get involved, get acquainted, and make a difference. We are proud that our neighborhood is diverse, and we believe we are a richer community for the variety of backgrounds and lifestyles in our midst. There’s no pretense here; newcomers are seldom strangers for long.
