The BungaLowdown

The BungaLowdown

Do you ever think about time travel? Just hopping into a DeLorean and heading back to the “good ol’ days” like Marty McFly? Or climbing into a phone booth like Bill & Ted? If you could go back in time, where (or when) would you return to?

If time travel was at all possible, Maison Manor would be first to help you achieve your flashback potential through home selection. The city of Saint Petersburg, Florida, is adorned with early and midcentury homes, including our current favorite, the bungalow.

Going back to an alternate era is now as easy as jumping into a hot tub time machine (well, almost).

Saint Petersburg is a gold mine for bungalow admirers. Some of its innermost urban cores are brimming with an abundance of charming bungalow (also known as craftsman) style homes. With roots dating back to the 1920’s and 30’s, many of the St. Pete bungalows have been lovingly restored to their period-era character with beautiful moldings and built-ins, while others have been hauled into the 21st century, featuring modernized kitchens and open floor plans. Some lay squarely in the middle, updated here and there to match whatever trend the owner fashioned. Whether you’re looking for the perfect home restoration or one that reflects a more contemporary style, Maison Manor is well prepared to help you find your slice of bungalow paradise.

As avid bungalow lovers ourselves, we are proud to say that Maison Manor has helped clients buy and sell craftsman style homes all over the sunshine city. We also love participating in historic home tours around town, such as the Historic Kenwood Bungalow Fest or the Historic Old Northeast Candlelight Tour of Homes. We love seeing these striking structures in all their stages: from tumble-down terrors to impeccably restored masterpieces!

To better assist you in your home buying search, Maison Manor has gathered a few noteworthy tips to keep in mind when scouting for a beloved bungalow.

1. What’s Good in Your Hood?

Finding the not-so-aloof bungalow starts with being in the right neighborhood. At Maison Manor, we are fortunate enough to live and work in some of the most popular bungalow neighborhoods in St. Pete. You could even say bungalow style homes are our bread and butter, so we know a thing or two about where to find them. Our agents are well-versed in showing these historic homes and can help you decide which neighborhood best suits your lifestyle.

2. What Makes a Bungalow, a Bungalow?

Learn to identify what makes a bungalow, a bungalow. Some of the tell-tale signs that a house is a bungalow is if it has a large front porch (perfect for warmer climates!), low profile architecture, and distinctive horizontal design features (such as low-pitched gables and wide overhanging eaves). Bungalows tend to be smaller in scale, typically one story, with maybe a finished loft or an detached guest quarter in the backyard. Not every bungalow will have these features in common, but educating yourself on what some these things look like will help you along in your home search.

3. Dream It to Believe It

Can you imagine what your dream house would look like? What about your dream bungalow? Now that we’ve got your wheels turning, use our Dream Home Worksheet to start planning!

The word bungalow is an all-encompassing term used to describe a one or one-and-a-half story home that was easily constructed and seen as less formal than traditional homes of its time. Within the types of bungalows built in the U.S. between 1900 and 1930, there are several styles that typically reflect on influences from their geographic location. These styles include the California bungalow, Arts & Crafts (Craftsman) style, Mission, Tudor, Prairie, Pueblo, Chicago, and Cape Cod bungalow.

4. Hire an Expert

You will want to hire a real estate agent who knows the ins and outs of buying historic homes. Behold: the trusty realtors of Maison Manor. We’ve been selling vintages homes for over seven years, and don’t plan to quit anytime soon! Our agents have remodeled bungalows, live in bungalow neighborhood, and know the true value and worth of a bungalow.

While this is just an introduction to the world of bungalows, the agents at Maison Manor are eager to help you navigate through the steps of purchasing one of these historic homes.
